HOW TO: Import a xml file as a dataset (Alternative) - Bi Publisher 11g
I have been trying for hours now to create a dataset within BiP 11g by importing in an XML file. There seems to be a lot of information around XML files for the 10g version of BiP, though no acknowledgement that importing XML files as data sets is available for the 11g version. Long story short, I have my doubts that this 11g version is even possible.
The example from oracle (Defining an XML file as a dataset Type) for creating datasets within BiP for 11g does not provide adequate the information to construct an XML data set.
I did notice within the Oracle documentation that it states, "There is no metadata available from XML file data sets, therefore grouping and linking are not supported.".
This basically states that even if you managed to import the XML file as a dataset, you cannot proceed with the following:
- You cannot group the entitlements together within a loop
- You cannot create a link between the XML file and another dataset.
To me, XML data feeds cannot deliver the same functionality in comparison to the other data sources' available. To compensate, Oracle within the 11g version have focused more on the MS bolt-ons than the basic XML data exchange. One item that is impressive is the excel import of the file as a dataset. It works so seamless and there's a lot of information and examples out there.
Alternative Solution
I would propose 2 alternatives than trying to get XML data feeds into Bi Publisher:
- 1) .xls files
- 2) Creating a database table by using an XML file
Mark's Blog regarding the excel dataset is a clear example (and works). It also demonstrates that linking is capable.
An XML-to-DB alternative is to create a database and populate the database tables with the contents of the XML file. Kishore's website as well as this blog on how to import XML file to DB table is also handy

For what I see, there's not too many supportive documentations out there that will demonstrate how provision AD group membership with the ICF connector using OpenIDM. The use of the special ldapGroups attribute is not explained anywhere in the Integrators guides to to the date of this blog. This quick blog identifies the tasks required to provision AD group membership from OpenIDM to AD using the LDAP ICF connector. However this doesn't really explain what ldapGroups actually does and there's no real worked example of how to go from an Assignment to ldapGroups to an assigned group in AD. I wrote up a wiki article for my own reference: AD group memberships automatically to users This is just my view, others may disagree, but I think the implementation experience could be improved with some more documentation and a more detailed example here.
